Your Ultimate Guide to Teeth Whitening in Doncaster East

Almost everyone wishes for whiter teeth.

According to a Harris Interactive survey, over half of adults believe that the friendliness of a person is revealed in their smile.

78% believe a smile reflects a person’s personality.

Because of these beliefs, 53% of those surveyed noted that if they could fix one thing about their teeth, it would be to whiten them.

And this is why whitening is the most commonly performed cosmetic dental treatment.

At DonEast Dental, we are expert in whitening, and we’re here to share our expertise with you!

Why Should I Whiten My Teeth?

There are a lot of reasons people might want to get their teeth whitened. People are different; and just as our hair and skin colour differ, so do our teeth.

The surface stains and internal discolouration of your teeth can be caused by food and drinks such as tea, coffee, red wine and blackcurrant, Accumulation of plaque and tartar deposits, Smoking, Ingesting too much fluoride, trauma to the teeth, Treatment with the antibiotic tetracycline during childhood, and natural ageing.

The following are some reasons why you may want to whiten your teeth:

  • To boost your self-confidence and self-esteem that comes with a great smile
  • To look much younger
  • To make an excellent first impression on others
  • To reverse years of tooth staining and yellowing

How Does Whitening Work?

Over-the-counter whiteners are easily available, but nowhere near as effective as whiteners from a dental office.

Whitening toothpaste

This seems like the easiest teeth whitening method – after all, you need to brush your teeth anyway – but in fact, toothpaste is best at maintaining an already white smile.

Many only contain silica, an abrasive ingredient that will scrub off superficial stains (only) but won’t whiten anything.

Whitening pens/gels

Whitening pens and gels can have some effect on stains, but they come with disadvantages. First, they are not as effective as other whitening approaches.

But, more importantly, they can lead to irritation and burns if not used very carefully. Many people notice a peculiar taste with gels and whitening pens.

The low concentrations of bleach also mean that these products work slowly, with gels in trays the best option.

Teeth-whitening strips

Teeth whitening strips have a whitening gel pre-applied. You peel a backing strip off of them and place them on your teeth as the instructions dictate.

Strips take a few weeks to work, you need to use them every day, and they make talking difficult. They are also uniformly sized, so they often don’t fit perfectly on teeth, leaving spots unwhitened.

Finally, most strips are for the front teeth, meaning you end up with teeth of two dramatically different colours.

Whitening from your trusted Doncaster East Dentist

The first thing to note about whitening at DonEast Dental is that the treatments are customised only for you. Teeth vary widely, and these differences can affect whitening.

Sometimes it takes a particular approach to get your smile up to 100% white and bright, and a dentist not only gets you the best treatment available but also calibrates it for optimum results.

Dentists also provide pre-treatment teeth cleanings which makes whitening much more effective by removing plaque buildup to allow hydrogen peroxide-based treatments to achieve maximum results.

More About Whitening At DonEast Dental

Before getting your teeth whitened at DonEast Dental, you need to consult with us to see if other issues exist that might affect your whitening process.

Some issues that complicate whitening are cavities, gum disease, or plaque buildup. These issues need to be addressed before whitening. Also, whitening is not effective on crowns.

Once you are identified as a good candidate for whitening, we offer two choices, in our office or in the convenience of your own home.

In-office whitening begins with a full examination of your teeth, a questionnaire to determine the cause of stains, and a good cleaning.

Then, we will protect your gums with gel or a rubber shield, to ensure there is no irritation. A tray full of whitening product is applied to your teeth, and the active ingredients in the gel will enter the enamel of the tooth and oxidise the stains there.

This process means you can come into our office and, after a one-hour visit, leave with teeth that are up to 8 shades brighter!

If you choose take-home whitening, we will make a mould of your teeth from which a customised set of trays will be manufactured.

Once the trays are ready, we send you home with your own gel and instructions for application.

You will apply the whitening agent for a few minutes a day, and after a few short weeks, your teeth will be noticeably brighter!

Either way, you get top quality products, careful and professional supervision, and the quickest and most effective whitening available!

In the first complete week of each August, the Australian Dental Association and all of Australia recognise Dental Health Week. This year, that week is from the 5th to 11th. The week is dedicated to topics that might help Australians improve their dental health, and of course, DonEast Dental fully supports that goal. In previous years the themes have been as broad as ‘oral health’, and as specific as women’s oral health, oral hygiene and diet, and oral hygiene and sport. This year, the topic is another general one – How’s Your Oral Health Tracking? This question asks two things; first, how is your oral health doing in a broad sense, and second, how well are you keeping track of it? After all, it is easy to believe we are doing well at oral hygiene, but how do we know if we are? And given that we live in busy times, this is a great topic. Most of us carry a wide range of responsibilities, tasks, hobbies, jobs, etc., that keep us busy enough to put oral hygiene and dental care off, sometimes. But did you know it could be those with the least busy schedules who have the hardest time keeping their dental care ‘on track’?
